About Pool Filter Guide

Pool Filter Guide exists because pool filter maintenance advice online is either too vague ("just backwash when it gets dirty") or written by people who have never touched a pool filter.

We are pool owners. We have sand filters, cartridge filters, and DE filters. We have made the mistakes - cracked multiport valves from moving them under pressure, overfilled tanks that immediately leaked, and sand that went grey three years too late. We write from that experience.

What We Cover

Our guides focus on the three main residential pool filter types:

  • Sand filters - how to backwash correctly, when to change the sand, which brand of #20 silica to buy
  • Cartridge filters - the right cleaning technique, chemical soak schedules, when to replace
  • DE filters - how much diatomaceous earth to add, grid cleaning, full disassembly

How We Test

Product reviews on this site are based on real use. When we review pool filter sand, we run sieve analysis and install it in real filters on real pools. When we compare filter cleaners, we load test cartridges with actual sunscreen and bather contamination and measure pressure recovery.

For products we cannot test ourselves (we only have so many pools), we say so clearly and rely on structured research across verified buyer data, manufacturer specifications, and published pool industry standards referenced from the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF).
