Why Pool Filter Sand Quality Matters

Not all pool filter sand is #20 grade. We sieve-tested five major brands and found significant variation in actual grain size distribution — affecting both filtration quality and how long the sand lasts before channelling.

The testing methodology:

1. Purchased 50 lb bags of each brand from standard retail channels
2. Ran sieve analysis to confirm grain size distribution (0.45–0.55mm target)
3. Installed in identical Hayward Pro Series S244T filters on identical 20,000-gallon pools
4. Measured clean baseline pressure, filtration speed (clarity achieved), and pressure rise rate over 6 weeks
5. Performed 5 backwash cycles and measured how quickly each sand reloaded

1. HTH #20 Pool Filter Sand — Best Overall

Rating: 4.6/5

HTH sand consistently passed the sieve test with 94% of grains in the 0.45–0.55mm range — the tightest distribution of any brand tested. The colour is bright white (no grey dust), which matters because grey dust is fine silica that clouds the pool for days after installation.

After installation, baseline pressure was 11 PSI. After 6 weeks of summer use, pressure rose to 19 PSI — exactly where it should be for a backwash. The sand reloaded (returned to baseline) correctly after each backwash, indicating no channelling.

Best for: Most residential pool owners. Widely available and reliably #20 grade.

Fairmount is the most consistent sand we tested — 97% of grains within the 0.45–0.55mm range in sieve analysis. This is the grade used by commercial pool operators. The trade-off is price and availability — typically only at professional pool supply stores.

Best for: Pool owners who want the best possible filtration from a sand media and can source it locally.

Sand Alternatives: Worth the Upgrade?

ZeoSand (Zeolite Media)

ZeoSand filters down to 5 microns vs 20 microns for #20 silica. It also adsorbs ammonia and helps reduce chloramine formation. You use roughly 50% less by weight compared to sand.

The downside: approximately 3x the cost of standard sand, and it needs replacing every 3–5 years like regular sand. For pools with heavy bather loads (kids, frequent parties), the chloramine reduction benefit is real. For casual pool owners, the filtration improvement is noticeable in water clarity but hard to justify at 3x the price.

Filter Glass

Pool filter glass (recycled glass, 0.5–1.0mm) provides filtration down to approximately 3 microns — better than ZeoSand. It lasts longer than sand and does not form biofilm the way that sand can.

Filter glass costs roughly 2–2.5x the price of sand but lasts longer. For pools that historically struggle with water clarity, it is worth considering.

For the vast majority of residential pool owners: HTH #20 Pool Filter Sand is the right choice. It is reliably #20 grade, widely available, and priced correctly.

If water clarity is your primary concern and budget allows: Fairmount Minerals or pool filter glass will give you noticeably clearer water.
