The Downsides Nobody Mentions

They compress and channel. Loose fiber packs down under pump pressure. Once it packs unevenly, water carves a low resistance path straight through the media and past most of the filtering surface. Pressure stays low, which looks like a clean filter, while the water slowly gets duller. Sand channels too, but it resists it better because the grains are heavy and angular.

They float and escape through worn laterals. Filter balls float on the way in, which is normal. The problem is on the way out. If a lateral is cracked or the slots have worn wide, fiber pushes through and ends up in the pool, and you will be picking strands out of the skimmer for weeks. Inspect the lateral assembly before you load balls into an older tank.

They need periodic machine washing. Backwashing alone does not restore flow indefinitely. Sunscreen and body oil bind to polyester, and the fix is pulling the media out and running it through a washing machine on a cold rinse with no detergent, or soaking it in filter cleaner. Plan on this once or twice a season. It is not hard, but it is a job sand never asks you to do.
