DE Pool Filter Grids - Cleaning, Inspecting, and Replacing
DE filter grids are the fabric frames that hold the diatomaceous earth powder. They need a full clean once per season and replacement every 5-10 years. A single torn grid sends DE into your pool - this guide shows you how to find the damage and fix it.
Pool Filter DE Powder - 25 lb Bag
After cleaning or replacing DE grids, recharged with fresh DE powder. One 25 lb bag covers a full swim season.
What DE Filter Grids Are
Inside a DE filter tank, 8 fabric-covered frames (grids) are connected to a central manifold pipe. These grids look like flattened pillowcases made of fine woven polyester.
The grids themselves do not filter pool water. They are just a support structure. The actual filtration happens in the thin coating of diatomaceous earth powder applied to the outside of each grid before every use.
When water enters the filter tank, it must pass through the DE-coated grids to reach the manifold. Particles down to 2-5 microns are trapped in the DE powder’s microscopic pores. Clean water exits through the manifold and returns to the pool.
The Annual Grid Cleaning - What You Are Removing
Backwashing removes the top layer of loaded DE and trapped debris. What it cannot remove is the oil and grease layer that builds up on the grid fabric itself over a swim season.
Body oils, sunscreen, and bather residue pass through the DE layer and coat the grid fabric. Over time, this oil layer:
- Prevents new DE from bonding properly to the grid surface
- Causes DE to rehydrate and clump rather than forming an even coating
- Accelerates pressure rise after each backwash
Annual chemical cleaning with a dedicated DE filter cleaner dissolves this layer. The result is grids that coat evenly with fresh DE and run at lower pressure throughout the following season.

Diagnosing a Torn Grid: The Light Test
Hold each grid up to a strong light source after rinsing.
- Healthy grid fabric: completely opaque, no light visible
- Damaged grid fabric: bright pinpoints or spots of light through the weave
Even a small tear - no larger than a needle hole - is enough to allow DE powder to bypass the grid and return to the pool. You will see the symptom as milky white water from the return jets within minutes of adding fresh DE.
If you see DE returning to the pool but cannot find a damaged grid by visual inspection, check the manifold connections. A cracked manifold pipe or a broken grid-to-manifold seal also allows DE to bypass the filtration system.
Replacing Individual Grids
You do not need to replace the entire grid assembly when one grid fails. Order a replacement grid matched to your specific filter model:

Common models and their grid sets:
- Hayward DE2420, DE3620, DE4820 - Hayward-specific grid sets
- Pentair FNS Plus - Pentair-specific grid sets
- Jandy DEV - Jandy-specific grid sets
Grids from different manufacturers are not interchangeable. Always match to your specific filter model.
After Grid Cleaning - Adding Fresh DE
After reassembling the filter with clean or new grids, add a full first charge of DE (100% of the filter’s rated capacity, not the 80% post-backwash amount).
Use the slurry method: mix DE with water in a bucket until smooth, then pour slowly into the skimmer with the pump running. See exact quantities: How Much DE for Pool Filter
