DE powder is the reason DE filters produce the clearest water of any residential filter type, and it is also the part of DE filter ownership most people would happily give up. It is a fine crystalline silica dust that you should not breathe, it makes a mess of the equipment pad, and a growing number of municipalities restrict where you can send it when you backwash.
The good news is that a DE filter does not actually require DE. The grids need a powder coating to filter, but that coating can be cellulose fiber or perlite instead of diatomaceous earth. Both are legitimate DE powder alternatives that coat the grids the same way and filter to a similar micron range. Why Pool Owners Look for a DE Powder Alternative
Nobody switches away from DE because it filters poorly. It filters to roughly 3 to 5 microns, the finest of any common pool media. People switch for three practical reasons.
The dust is a health hazard. Pool-grade DE is calcined diatomaceous earth, which contains crystalline silica. Inhaling crystalline silica dust is a documented respiratory risk, which is why the bags carry warnings and why you should wear a dust mask every time you dry-handle the powder. Scooping DE out of a bag on a breezy day puts a visible cloud of exactly the dust you are not supposed to breathe into the air around your face.
It is messy. DE gets on everything near the equipment pad. It cakes when damp, drifts when dry, and every recharge means handling a powder that behaves like extremely fine flour.
Disposal rules are tightening. When you backwash a DE filter, the waste water carries spent DE with it. Many municipalities now prohibit discharging DE-laden backwash water to storm drains, and some restrict sending it to the sanitary sewer as well, requiring a separation tank or bag so the solids can go to the trash instead. Cellulose fiber and perlite address all three points to different degrees. Neither contains crystalline silica, and cellulose in particular is treated far more leniently by most local disposal rules.
The Two Real Alternatives Compared
Only two materials genuinely substitute for DE powder in a DE filter: cellulose fiber and perlite. Both are dosed through the skimmer, travel to the filter, and deposit as a coating on the grids - exactly how DE works.

Cellulose Fiber (Fiber Clear and Similar Brands)
Cellulose fiber is a processed plant fiber, sold for pools under brand names like Fiber Clear. Because it is organic fiber rather than mineral dust, it is the safest DE powder alternative to handle - no crystalline silica, and far less airborne mess when you scoop it.
It is also remarkably light. Cellulose products typically call for about 25 to 30 percent of the weight of DE for the same coating job, so a filter rated for 6 lbs of DE needs somewhere around 1.5 to 2 lbs of cellulose. Follow the product’s DE-equivalency chart for your exact dose - brands vary, and overdosing raises filter pressure quickly.
The tradeoffs are honest ones. Cellulose breaks down faster than mineral media, so you will recharge more often than you did with DE, and because you are buying more recharges of a pricier product, cellulose usually costs more per season than DE despite the small doses. Filtration is in a similar fine-micron range to DE - most owners see no difference in water clarity.

Perlite (PoolPerl and Similar Products)
Perlite is volcanic glass that has been heated until it expands into a lightweight, porous white granule - the same material you see in potting soil, processed to a filtration grade for pools (Harsco’s PoolPerl is a common example). In a DE filter it behaves much like DE: it coats the grids, filters to a similar fine range, and recharges on a comparable schedule.
Dosing is about half the weight of DE for the same job, so a 6 lb DE filter takes roughly 3 lbs of perlite - again, follow the product’s chart rather than a blanket ratio. Perlite is still a dust, and you should avoid breathing it just as you would any fine powder, but it is amorphous glass rather than crystalline silica, which removes the specific hazard that makes DE dust a problem. It is also so light that a season’s supply is easy to carry and pour.

What Does Not Work as a DE Substitute
This is where pool forums produce genuinely bad advice, so it is worth being blunt.
Sand cannot go in a DE filter. Sand is a bed media - it needs a sand filter tank with laterals to work. Poured into a DE filter, it will not coat the grids, it will abrade them, and it will end up back in your pool. The same goes for filter glass and zeolite: right media, wrong filter type.
Cartridge elements do not fit a DE filter. Cartridge and DE filters look similar from the outside but the internals are not interchangeable. You cannot drop a cartridge into a DE tank and skip the powder.
Running bare grids destroys them. The most tempting shortcut - just running the filter with no powder at all - is the most damaging. The grid fabric is designed to be protected by a powder coating. Run bare, fine debris embeds directly into the fabric where no amount of cleaning removes it, and the exposed fabric wears through far faster than it should. A full grid set is a significant expense; the powder is what keeps it alive.
“Food grade DE” and garden kieselguhr are not upgrades. Kieselguhr is simply another name for diatomaceous earth, so it is not an alternative at all - and non-pool grades are the wrong physical form. Pool DE is calcined specifically to filter properly; food-grade DE is uncalcined and will turn to a clogging paste on your grids. Flour, obviously, is a joke answer that occasionally gets repeated seriously. It is not.

How to Switch From DE to an Alternative
Switching takes one recharge cycle and no hardware changes.
Step 1: Find your filter’s DE weight rating. It is on the filter’s label or in the manual, stated as pounds of DE (commonly 4 to 8 lbs for residential filters). Step 2: Get all of the old DE out. Backwash thoroughly to purge the spent DE. Step 3: Dose the alternative by the product’s DE-equivalency chart. The bag or tub will list how much of the product replaces each pound of rated DE capacity. Use that chart, not a rule of thumb. As a sanity check, expect roughly 25 to 30 percent of the DE weight for cellulose and about half for perlite.
Step 4: Add it through the skimmer with the pump running. Pre-mix the powder into a bucket of water to a thin slurry and pour it slowly into the skimmer, exactly as you would with DE. Step 5: Note your new clean pressure. Record the filter pressure once the media has settled. That number is your new baseline; recharge when pressure rises 8 to 10 psi above it, same as with DE.
Does It Affect Warranty or Performance?
Warranty: Most grid manufacturers have no issue with cellulose or perlite - the grids do not care what the coating is made of as long as they have one. That said, check your filter’s manual before switching. A few manufacturers specify approved media, and if your filter is still under warranty it costs nothing to confirm.
Performance: In day-to-day use, water clarity with cellulose or perlite is close enough to DE that most owners cannot tell the difference. What you will notice is operational: cellulose needs recharging more often as it breaks down, and your pressure-rise behavior may differ slightly from what you were used to with DE. Neither alternative harms the grids, plumbing, or pump.
The Honest Verdict
DE powder is still the finest-filtering media you can buy for the money. If pure water clarity per dollar is your only measure, nothing here beats it, and switching away from DE will not improve your filtration.
Switch for the other reasons. If you are tired of dry-handling a crystalline silica dust, if the mess bothers you, or if your municipality’s backwash disposal rules have turned every recharge into a compliance exercise, cellulose fiber or perlite will do the same job to a standard your eyes cannot distinguish, with none of the silica hazard. Choose cellulose if handling safety and easy disposal matter most and you can accept more frequent recharges at a higher seasonal cost. Choose perlite if you want the closest like-for-like replacement for DE at a moderate price. And whatever you do, keep something on those grids - the one true non-option is running a DE filter with no media at all.
