Air in Pool Filter: Causes, Diagnosis, and Fixes

Air in your pool filter is one of the most common problems pool owners run into, and it is almost always caused by a single thing: the pump is sucking air in through a leak on the suction side. The good news is that most of these leaks are cheap and fixable in an afternoon with basic tools. This guide walks through what the air means, exactly where it gets in, how to hunt down the leak, and how to seal each source.

What Air in the System Means and Why It Matters

Your pool circulation system has two sides. The suction side runs from the pool (skimmer and main drain) to the front of the pump. The pressure side runs from the pump, through the filter, and back out to the returns. Everything before the pump impeller is under vacuum, and everything after it is under pressure.

That distinction is the key to the whole problem. On the pressure side, a leak pushes water out, so you get a drip. On the suction side, the same gap sucks air in, because the pump is pulling a vacuum on that plumbing. So when you see air bubbles in the pool pump basket or air in the filter tank, the leak is always upstream of the pump, never after it.

Why does it matter beyond looking wrong? Air displaces water, so the pump moves less water and your turnover suffers. Trapped air in the pump can make it lose prime and run dry, which overheats the shaft seal and can burn out the motor. Where Air Gets In: The Suction Side

Because a pump sucking air is always drawing it in before the impeller, the search area is small. Here are the usual entry points, roughly in order of how often they cause trouble.

  • Pump lid O-ring. The lid on the strainer basket seals with a large O-ring. When it dries out, cracks, or picks up grit, it stops sealing and pulls air. This is the number one culprit for air in a pool pump.
  • Low water at the skimmer. If the water drops below the middle of the skimmer mouth, the skimmer gulps air along with water. No hardware is broken; the pool is just low.
  • Drain plugs. Most pumps have one or two threaded drain plugs at the base of the strainer housing. If the thread tape or O-ring has failed, they whistle air in.
  • Pump union. The threaded union that connects the suction pipe to the pump has its own O-ring. If it is loose or the O-ring is flat, air slips past.
  • Suction valve stems. Multiport or diverter valves on the suction line have stems sealed by O-rings. Worn stems let air in around the handle.
  • Cracked pump housing. Less common, but a hairline crack in the plastic strainer pot, often from a past freeze, pulls air continuously and cannot be sealed with lube.

How to Find the Leak

The trick to finding a suction-side leak is that you cannot see air the way you can see water. You have to make the leak reveal itself.

Start with the pump basket. If your pump has a clear lid, watch the strainer basket while the pump runs. A little swirl of bubbles right after startup is normal, but a steady stream collecting at the top of the basket confirms an active air leak. This is your primary indicator throughout the test.

Now do the spray test. With the pump running, take a can of shaving cream or a spray bottle of water mixed with a little dish soap and coat each suction fitting one at a time. When you cover the actual leak, the vacuum sucks the foam or soapy film inward and you will see it disappear into the joint, or the bubbles in the basket will suddenly increase or change. Work methodically: pump lid seam first, then the union, then each drain plug, then valve stems, then any glued pipe joints on the suction run.

Do not skip the water level check before you start. Top the pool up to about halfway up the skimmer opening first, because chasing fittings while the skimmer is starved of water wastes an afternoon.

Fixing Each Source

Once you know where the air is getting in, the repairs are straightforward.

Pump lid O-ring. Turn off the pump, remove the lid, and pull the O-ring. If it is cracked or flattened, replace it. If it just looks dry, clean it and the groove, then apply a thin coat of silicone lube. A tube of silicone O-ring lube on Amazon lasts for years and is the single best preventive for lid leaks. Reseat the O-ring and hand-tighten the lid only. Never use a wrench on a pump lid.

Drain plugs. Unscrew each plug, remove old thread tape, and wrap 3 to 4 turns of fresh Teflon tape clockwise, or replace the plug O-ring. Hand-tighten plus a small nudge, do not overtighten plastic threads.

Pump union. Hand-tighten the union collar first. If air continues, unscrew it, replace or lube the union O-ring, and reassemble. A worn union O-ring is a common hidden leak.

Suction valve stems. Rebuild kits with fresh stem O-rings are available for most diverter valves. Replace the O-rings and lube them.

Low water. Just add water until the level sits about halfway up the skimmer mouth.

The Air Relief Valve and How to Bleed the Tank

Every filter tank has a small air relief valve on top, usually a manual bleeder or a small spring-loaded knob. Its job is to let trapped air escape so the tank fills completely with water.

Bleeding is simple. With the pump running, open the air relief valve. You will hear air hiss out first. Once a steady, solid stream of water comes out with no sputtering, the tank is full of water and you close the valve. This is not a repair for a leak; it just clears air that is already trapped inside the tank.

When a Few Bubbles Are Normal vs a Real Leak

Not every bubble is a problem, so it helps to know the difference before you tear into the plumbing.

Normal air clears itself. When you first start the pump, or right after you have opened the pump basket or the filter, some air is trapped in the lines and tank. You will see bubbles for 30 to 60 seconds, and then the basket runs clear and the returns stop spitting. That is the system purging itself, and it is nothing to fix.

A real leak does not clear. If you still see a steady stream of bubbles in the pump basket after a minute, or air is continuously coming out of the pool jets, or bubbles from the pool returns never stop, you have an active suction-side leak. When to Call a Pro

Most air leaks are DIY territory. Call a professional when the leak is on a glued pipe joint underground, when you suspect a cracked pump housing or a failing shaft seal, or when you have replaced every accessible O-ring and topped up the water and the bubbles still will not stop. A pro can pressure-test the suction lines to find a hidden crack you cannot reach.
