How to Clean a Pool Sand Filter - Complete Guide
Cleaning a pool sand filter goes beyond backwashing. This guide covers backwashing, chemical filter cleaning, and full sand replacement - so you know exactly which method to use and when.

Three Levels of Sand Filter Cleaning
Cleaning a pool sand filter is not a single procedure - it is three different procedures, each addressing a different type of contamination.
Level 1 - Backwashing: Removes particulate debris (dirt, algae, mineral particles). Done when pressure rises 8-10 PSI above baseline. Takes 3-5 minutes.
Level 2 - Chemical cleaning: Dissolves oils, sunscreen residue, and body fats. Done once per season or when backwashing stops restoring normal pressure. Takes overnight.
Level 3 - Sand replacement: Fully refreshes the filter media. Done every 5-7 years when the sand is channelled, clumped, or fouled beyond what cleaning can fix. Takes 2-3 hours.
Most pool owners only know about Level 1. The sand filter cleaning problems that “won’t go away” are almost always a Level 2 problem.
Level 1: Backwashing
Backwashing is the routine maintenance step that removes accumulated debris from your sand filter.
When to backwash: When the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above your clean baseline pressure. Write your baseline on waterproof tape on the filter.
Procedure:
- Turn pump off
- Connect backwash hose to waste port
- Set valve to BACKWASH
- Restart pump, run 2-3 minutes until sight glass clears

What backwashing does NOT remove: Body oils, sunscreen, tanning lotions. These coat the sand grains and gradually clog the pores even after backwashing. This is why a sand filter that “used to clear up by morning” now takes days.
Level 2: Chemical Filter Cleaning
Chemical filter cleaning dissolves the oil and grease layer that backwashing cannot remove.
When to use it:
- Once at the start of every swim season
- When backwashing does not restore normal baseline pressure
- When water stays cloudy despite correct chemistry and normal PSI
- When the filter needs backwashing more frequently than usual

How to apply chemical cleaner:

After chemical cleaning, baseline pressure should return to the same level as when the sand was new. If it does not, the sand may need replacing.
Once-a-season cleaning trick: At pool opening, add the filter cleaner the night before you plan to do your first proper backwash. One treatment wakes up the sand and sets you up for the whole season.
Level 3: Sand Replacement
Sand replacement is needed when cleaning no longer restores the filter to proper performance.
Signs the sand needs replacing:
- Sand has turned brown or grey (bacterial fouling)
- Pressure drops and rises in an unusual pattern (“channelling” - water finds paths of least resistance)
- Fine debris passes through the filter back to the pool
- The sand is 7+ years old

What NOT to Use to Clean Pool Filter Sand
Do not use household cleaners, bleach, dish soap, or general-purpose degreasers in your pool sand filter. These produce foam in the filter and plumbing, damage internal seals and O-rings, and introduce phosphates that promote algae growth.
