How Often to Change a Pool Filter - Sand, Cartridge and DE
Pool filter sand lasts 5-7 years. Cartridge elements last 2-3 years. DE grids last 5-10 years. The housing itself almost never needs replacing. This guide tells you exactly when each component is due and the signs that override the schedule.
Replacement Intervals by Filter Type
| Component | Replace Every | Signs to Replace Sooner |
|---|---|---|
| Pool filter sand | 5-7 years | Grey/clumped sand, channelling, cloudy water after backwash |
| Cartridge element | 2-3 years | Torn media, collapsed pleats, cleaning fails to restore baseline |
| DE filter grids | 5-10 years | DE returns to pool, visible grid tears, cracked manifold |
| Filter housing | 15-25 years | Tank cracks, irreparable valve damage |
| Multiport valve | 7-10 years | Port leaks, difficult to turn, incorrect routing |
| Pressure gauge | 3-5 years | Needle stuck, no response to backwash |
Sand Filters - Change Every 5-7 Years
Sand degrades in two ways: oil saturation and channelling. Over years of use, body oils and sunscreen coat the grains and reduce filtration efficiency. Eventually the sand can also form channels - paths of least resistance where water bypasses the filter bed entirely.
The 5-year vs 7-year difference is maintenance. Pools that do annual chemical filter cleaning consistently get 7+ years from a sand charge. Pools that only backwash and skip chemical cleaning often notice declining performance by year 4-5.
Signs to change sooner than 5 years:
- Water stays slightly cloudy even after backwashing with correct chemistry
- Backwash water runs clear almost immediately (channelling)
- Sand is visibly grey and clumped when you scoop a sample
- Pressure rises unusually quickly after a fresh backwash

Recommended annual maintenance: Use a dedicated pool filter cleaner once per season to dissolve oil buildup. Pool filter cleaner for sand filters on Amazon
Cartridge Filters - Change Every 2-3 Years
Cartridge media compresses and mats over time. Unlike sand, cartridge media cannot be backwashed - it is physically removed and cleaned. Even with excellent maintenance, the fiber structure degrades after 2-3 years.
Budget cartridges from no-name suppliers often fail within 6-12 months. Name-brand replacements (Pleatco, Filbur, Unicel) matched to your specific filter model reliably last 2-3 years with proper care.
Signs to change sooner:
- Cleaning - including a full overnight chemical soak - no longer restores pressure to baseline
- Visible tears, pinholes (hold up to light), or collapsed pleats
- Cracked end caps

DE Filters - Replace Grids Every 5-10 Years
DE filter grids last longer than cartridges because the fabric is more robust, but they fail differently. The most common failure is a small tear in the grid fabric - often invisible until DE powder starts returning to your pool through the return jets.
Annual inspection is the key. During the seasonal full disassembly and cleaning, hold each grid up to a strong light. Pinholes show as bright spots through the fabric. A single damaged grid can pass DE and fine debris into the pool while the others work normally.
Replace individual failed grids rather than the whole set unless multiple grids are damaged simultaneously.

What Changes Your Replacement Interval
Extends filter life:
- Annual chemical filter cleaning (removes oil before it saturates media)
- Properly sized filter (running undersized filters loads media faster)
- Running correct daily hours (see How Long Should Pool Filter Run)
Shortens filter life:
- Heavy bather loads (kids, frequent parties)
- High sunscreen use (SPF 50+ spray sunscreen is particularly harsh on sand)
- Algae events (dead algae loads the filter rapidly)
- Skipping seasonal maintenance
