Best DE Pool Filter 2025 — Tested and Ranked
Our Verdict
The Pentair FNS Plus 48 is the best DE filter for most residential pools. The 48 sq ft of filter area is right-sized for pools up to 30,000 gallons, the grid design allows a full annual service without pulling the entire manifold, and Pentair's DE pool filters have earned a reputation for outlasting cheaper alternatives by a decade or more.
DE Filters vs Sand and Cartridge: The Honest Tradeoff
DE filters produce the clearest water of any pool filter type. The 2-5 micron filtration threshold is genuinely meaningful - sand filters let particles through down to 20-40 microns, and cartridge filters to 10-15 microns. You will notice the difference in a side-by-side comparison.
The tradeoff is maintenance. Not difficult maintenance - but consistent maintenance:
- After every backwash: add fresh DE powder (5-10 minutes)
- Annual: full grid disassembly, chemical soak, and inspection (1-2 hours)
- Ongoing: DE powder is a consumable cost
If you have a sand filter and are happy with your water clarity, the upgrade to DE is a personal choice about water quality vs maintenance commitment. If you have an algae problem or have guests frequently, DE’s finer filtration means water stays cleaner longer.
Filters Tested
1. Pentair FNS Plus 48 - Best Overall
Rating: 4.6/5 | Check price on Amazon
The FNS Plus 48 has been the benchmark residential DE filter for years. The 48 sq ft filter area hits the sweet spot for pools in the 20,000-35,000 gallon range - frequent enough backwashing to keep debris from building up without backwashing every few days.
The distinguishing feature is the grid design. On many DE filters, annual service requires pulling out the entire manifold assembly - a messy and awkward process. The FNS Plus allows you to service the individual grids without removing the full manifold, which cuts the annual service time considerably.
Tank construction is the thickest of any unit tested. After years of pressure cycling, cheaper DE filters develop micro-cracks in the tank. The Pentair did not show any deformation after extended testing.
Best for: Pools 20,000-35,000 gallons, pool owners who want the best water clarity with manageable maintenance.
2. Hayward Pro-Grid W3DE4820 - Best Runner-Up
Rating: 4.4/5 | Check price on Amazon
The Hayward Pro-Grid delivers nearly identical filtration performance to the Pentair FNS Plus at a slightly lower price point. The 48 sq ft capacity and backwash mechanism work equally well. Hayward’s grid material has a good track record - tears are the most common DE filter maintenance issue, and the Pro-Grid grids held up without damage across testing.
The lid requires a wrench to remove, which is the main ergonomic disadvantage compared to the Pentair’s clamp-style opening. Minor complaint, but it adds a minute to every service.
Hayward’s replacement grids (DEX4820DC) are slightly less expensive than Pentair equivalents and available at most pool supply stores.
Best for: Existing Hayward pump owners, or buyers where the Pentair FNS Plus is not locally available.
3. Pentair FNS Plus 60 - Best for Larger Pools
Rating: 4.6/5 | Check price on Amazon
Same construction quality as the 48, with 60 sq ft of filter area for pools above 35,000 gallons. The larger capacity means backwashing every 3-4 weeks instead of every 1-2 weeks. If your pool is under 35,000 gallons, the 48 is the better value - the extra capacity is not necessary and the tank footprint is larger.
Best for: Pools 35,000-50,000 gallons, or any pool owner who wants to minimize backwash frequency.
4. Hayward DE 2400 W3DE2420 - Best for Smaller Pools
Rating: 4.2/5 | Check price on Amazon
The DE2420 brings 24 sq ft of DE filtration to pools under 20,000 gallons at a considerably lower price than the 48 sq ft units. Water clarity is the same - you are getting identical 2-5 micron filtration. The tradeoff is more frequent backwashing (every 1-2 weeks for a 15,000-gallon pool).
For an above-ground pool or a small inground pool where DE’s superior clarity is desired without the larger footprint and cost of the 48 sq ft models, this is the right choice.
Best for: Pools under 20,000 gallons, pools with limited equipment pad space.
DE Powder: What to Buy
All DE filters require diatomaceous earth powder. The product to buy is food-grade or pool-grade DE - not the kind sold for pest control (that has added chemicals). Pool-grade DE is available at pool supply stores and Amazon.
One 25 lb bag of DE powder runs $20-30 and covers a full season of backwashing for most residential pools.

Grid Replacement: What It Costs
DE filter grids are the wear item. Inspect them annually - a pinhole or tear allows DE to pass into the pool through the return jets, turning the water cloudy white. Replacement grids for the Pentair FNS Plus 48 (PLFNS48CART) run $80-120 for the full set. For the Hayward Pro-Grid (DEX4820DC), replacement grids are typically $70-100.
With proper care, grids last 5-10 years. Avoid pressure washing them - it damages the fabric.
