DE Filters vs Sand and Cartridge: The Honest Tradeoff

DE filters produce the clearest water of any pool filter type. The 2-5 micron filtration threshold is genuinely meaningful - sand filters let particles through down to 20-40 microns, and cartridge filters to 10-15 microns. You will notice the difference in a side-by-side comparison.

The tradeoff is maintenance. Not difficult maintenance - but consistent maintenance:

1. After every backwash: add fresh DE powder (5-10 minutes)
2. Annual: full grid disassembly, chemical soak, and inspection (1-2 hours)
3. Ongoing: DE powder is a consumable cost

The distinguishing feature is the grid design. On many DE filters, annual service requires pulling out the entire manifold assembly - a messy and awkward process. The FNS Plus allows you to service the individual grids without removing the full manifold, which cuts the annual service time considerably.

Tank construction is the thickest of any unit tested. After years of pressure cycling, cheaper DE filters develop micro-cracks in the tank. The Pentair did not show any deformation after extended testing.

DE Powder: What to Buy

All DE filters require diatomaceous earth powder. The product to buy is food-grade or pool-grade DE - not the kind sold for pest control (that has added chemicals). Pool-grade DE is available at pool supply stores and Amazon.

Grid Replacement: What It Costs

DE filter grids are the wear item. Inspect them annually - a pinhole or tear allows DE to pass into the pool through the return jets, turning the water cloudy white.
