Intex sells two very different filter systems, and the first step of any intex pump setup is knowing which one is in your box.

Krystal Clear cartridge filter pumps are the entry-level units bundled with most Intex Easy Set and metal-frame pools. They pull water through a pleated paper cartridge (the Type A or Type B element) that traps debris, then push clean water back to the pool. Where to Place the Pump: Below Water Level on Level Ground

Intex above-ground pumps rely on gravity to feed water, so placement is not optional detail; it decides whether the pump primes at all.

Set the pump on level, stable ground right next to the pool, and make sure the pump body sits below the pool waterline. The pool has to be higher than the pump so water flows down into it. For Sand Models: Fill With Sand First

Skip this section entirely if you have a Krystal Clear cartridge pump.

On an SX-series sand pump, the sand goes in before any hose is connected. Loading it afterward is clumsy and risks knocking a hose loose.

  1. Set the tank in its final position on level ground.
  2. Half-fill the tank with water. This cushions the plastic lateral tubes at the bottom so they do not crack when sand lands on them.
  3. Cover the center standpipe opening with your hand or a strip of tape so no sand falls down inside it.
  4. Pour in pool filter sand slowly. Use only #20 grade silica pool filter sand, never play sand or builder’s sand, which are too fine and cloud the pool.
  5. Fill to the amount specified for your model, then clear the standpipe and seat the valve.

Connecting the Hoses and Strainer Connectors

This is the step where most Intex leaks are born, so work slowly. The flow path on any Intex setup is: pool outlet plunger to pump inlet, then pump outlet (through the filter) back to the pool inlet plunger.

  1. From inside the pool, push the two plungers into the wall fittings. Push them down/closed while you work so water does not gush out.
  2. From outside, thread a strainer connector onto each plunger opening. Seat the rubber gasket and turn the collar hand-tight, then a firm extra quarter turn. Do not use a wrench; over-tightening splits the plastic threads.
  3. Attach one hose from the outlet-side strainer connector to the pump inlet. On sand models the inlet is the port marked on the pump body; on cartridge models it is the side without the cartridge chamber restriction.
  4. Attach the second hose from the pump outlet (or, on sand models, the filter return) to the inlet-side strainer connector.
  5. Tighten every hose collar and clamp the same way: hand-tight plus a firm turn. A loose collar on the suction side lets air in and stops priming; a loose collar on the pressure side drips.
  6. Once every joint is tight, pull the plungers up/open from inside the pool to let water flow.

A common trap is connecting the hoses backwards so the pump tries to pull from the return side. Follow the inlet and outlet labels on the pump, and remember the pump always sits between the pool and the filter.

GFCI Power and Cord Safety

Intex filter pumps run on mains power right next to water, so the electrical setup is a genuine safety requirement, not a suggestion.

Plug the pump into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. Most Intex pumps sold in North America include a GFCI or RCD device built into the plug itself; press its test button before every use to confirm it trips and resets. If your outlet is not GFCI protected and the plug has no built-in device, have an electrician fit a GFCI outlet before running the pump.

  • Do not run the pump from an indoor extension cord.
  • Any extension cord must be rated for outdoor wet use and heavy enough for the pump’s amperage; a thin cord overheats and drops voltage.

  • Never handle the plug with wet hands.

Priming, First Startup, and Bleeding Air

With the hoses on, the plungers open, and power ready, it is time to prime. Priming just means getting the trapped air out so water fills the pump before the motor spins.

  1. Find the air release valve on top of the pump or sand tank (a small knurled knob or bleed screw).
  2. Open it. With the plungers open and the pump below the waterline, pool water pushes into the pump and forces air out through this valve. You will hear hissing, then see water start to weep out.
  3. When water flows steadily from the air release valve with no more air, close it.
  4. Switch the pump on. Within 30 to 60 seconds you should feel and see steady flow returning to the pool through the inlet plunger.

The 6-Position Valve Basics for Sand Models

Cartridge owners can skip this; there is no valve to set. Sand pumps have a 6-position valve on top, and knowing what each does prevents the classic mistake of running on the wrong setting.

  • FILTER: normal running position. Water passes down through the sand and back to the pool. This is where the valve stays almost all the time.
  • BACKWASH: reverses flow to flush dirt out of the sand and to waste. Use it when pressure climbs or flow drops.
  • RINSE: settles the sand bed after a backwash; run 30 seconds before returning to FILTER.
  • RECIRCULATE: bypasses the sand, sending water straight back to the pool without filtering.
  • DRAIN / WASTE: sends water straight to waste, bypassing the sand, for lowering the pool level.

Common Setup Problems: Weak Flow, Leaks, and Air

Most first-run faults on an Intex system trace back to a handful of causes.

Weak or no flow. Almost always the pump sits too high or was never fully primed. Confirm the pump is below the waterline, bleed all the air through the release valve, and check the pool level is above the inlet plunger. On sand models, confirm the valve is on FILTER and not RECIRCULATE or a half-turned position. A clogged cartridge or a dirty pump strainer basket also chokes flow.

Leaks at the plungers or hose collars. The rubber gaskets are the usual culprit. Take the joint apart, check the gasket is seated flat and undamaged, and retighten hand-tight plus a firm turn. Air in the system. A steady stream of bubbles returning to the pool means air is being drawn in on the suction side.
